What Greenpeace built with Greelow
Greenpeace — the world's largest environmental non-governmental organization — chose Greelow to build a mobile app that would deepen the relationship with existing supporters and reach new ones. The goal wasn't a marketing app. It was a working tool for campaign participation: sign petitions, get involved in local actions, contribute to donor campaigns, all from a phone.
Greelow assembled a small, senior squad — one project manager and three developers — and delivered a working beta two months into the engagement. The app then iterated through several releases, each adding features that responded to how supporters actually used it.
The Challenge
Greenpeace wanted three things from the app:
- Higher engagement. Move supporters from occasional email opens to regular, active participation in campaigns.
- New supporter acquisition. Reach people who hadn't yet joined and give them a low-friction entry point.
- Better donor conversion. Reduce the steps between "I want to help" and "I've donated" — the drop-off in that funnel is the difference between a five-figure and six-figure campaign.
They also had constraints: the app had to reflect Greenpeace's mission and voice, integrate cleanly with existing supporter databases, and be maintainable by their internal team after handoff.
The Solution
The Greelow squad worked in short cycles from the start. After a series of preliminary meetings, we built a prototype, agreed on clear project stages, and picked the MERN stack — MongoDB, Express, React, Node.js — for delivery speed and long-term maintainability by Greenpeace's own team.
Two months in, the first beta was in the client's hands. From there, the app evolved through several iterations, adding features tuned to how supporters were actually using it: campaign feeds, petition signing, event participation, and a streamlined donation flow.
Alongside the build, we introduced the Greenpeace team to scrum methodologies, Slack, and Jira. That was a lasting handoff — they carried those practices into their own subsequent projects.

15 months (January 2017 – April 2018).
The Outcome
The metrics moved in the directions Greenpeace was aiming for:
- Engagement lifted 25% compared to their previous supporter-outreach strategies.
- Donor acquisition rose measurably — a secondary goal that became a real result.
- Feedback on the app was overwhelmingly positive across the supporter base.
The app made campaign participation and donation a few-taps interaction. That's the difference between "I meant to sign that petition" and "I signed it." Multiplied across a supporter base the size of Greenpeace's, that difference shows up in the numbers.
Beyond the metrics, the app helped Greenpeace share their vision — a greener, healthier, more peaceful planet — with more people. Which is what the whole build was for.
